Our Engagement Photoshoot! Hair and Makeup Details

After being engaged for 15 months, Tommie and I finally had our engagement photo shoot recently! It was so much fun. We lucked out with a partially cloudy day on the beach. This made the lighting ideal and since it was not super hot, the beach was quite empty.  It was pretty windy at points but we made the most of it! Read on for details about my hair and makeup and see my favorite shots.

I so badly would have loved to get my hair done professionally, but since the shoot was early-ish, this wasn't an option. I kept going back and force on risking day 2 hair for the shoot or waking up crazy early to let my hair air dry for hours but also knowing I would have to diffuse which doesn't always come out great. Curly hair struggles are so, so real! Ultimately, I decided to wake up before dawn and go with day 1 hair. I did my "holiest of holy grail" routines that I always do now when I want my hair to look the best it possibly can.

Here is what I used:
  • Pre Poo: The Mane Choice Heavenly Halo Pre-Poo - used overnight
  • Cleanser: Curlsmith Curl Quenching Conditioning Cleanser
  • Conditioner: DevaCurl Melt Into Moisture and Deep Sea Repair masks mixed - left in about 20 minutes before rinsing
  • Stylers (wet): DevaCurl Heaven In Hair (as a leave in), Raw Curls Anti-Frizz Spray, DevaCurl B'Leave In, ArcAngel Gel, Mirror Curls, Flexible Hold Hairspray
  • Stylers (dry- pre diffusing): Briogeo Rosarco Blow Dry Heat Protectant Creme
  • Stylers (dry- post diffusing): more DevaCurl Mirrorcurls mixed with SuperCream (front only), more DevaCurl Flexible Hold Hairspray (all over)
After the shower, I applied products as usual onto soaking wet hair one by one, scrunching them in with my hair flipped upside down in the shower.  After applying all the products, I scrunched a ton again. I wrapped my hair in my Curl Ease towel while doing all my skin care stuff, removed the towel, then applied a little more ArcAngel and MirrorCurls mixed together and scrunched a whole lot more. I then air dried for hours before diffusing. If you missed it, see my video on my product application HERE, but in this blog post I did use additional product for my hair to hold up and look extra nice.

Before diffusing my roots, I used Briogeo Rosarco Blow Dry Heat Protectant Creme. This is my all time favorite heat protectant since it is silicone free! Plus it is Briogeo so the creme is infused with good for the hair ingredients such as Rosarco- rosehip, argan and coconut oils.

I used the DevaCurl DevaFuser. I love the shape of the hand. I diffused rotating between cool air and warm air and made sure to finish off with the cool to seal the cuticle. I moved my head around but kept the diffuser still in each spot. This helped achieve minimum frizz.

Once I was all done diffusing, my front/hairline pieces were still looking a bit frizzy and dry, as usual. I went in with more MirrorCurls mixed with SuperCream to try and hydrate. I then finished with more hairspray all over for good measure.

I decided to do my own makeup, even though a professional obviously would have been better. These are my real products I reach for quite often- some of them look extremely used and almost finished well, because they are!
I've used some tried and true favorites since a day with important pictures is not a day to try new things:

Primer: Wander Beauty Rise and Prime
-This primer helps keep my skin matte and prolongs the wear of any foundation I wear on top of it.

Foundation: Mix of Doll 10 Beauty HydraLux Foundation in FAIR with It Cosmetics CC Cream in LIGHT
-I actually have to mix the fair and light shades in both of these brands. Please make Fair-Light a real shade! Anyway, I've been loving mixing these two specific products together because they give me such full coverage but still looks like my real skin, has skincare ingredients and  also has SPF! Since we were shooting outside on the beach, the SPF was very important!

Concealer: Mally Beauty Dark Circle Corrector in Lighter and Doll 10 Beauty HydraBalm Concealer in LIGHT on top
-Because my dark circles are super duper dark. The Mally Corrector is so super thin in consistency you don't even feel it, but it does an excellent job at helping concealers brighten and cover my circles even more.  The Doll 10 Beauty concealer plays nice with any powder I have tried on top, is very pigmented and easy to apply.

Contour: Mally Beauty Shimmer, Shape and Go Contour Stick
-I love sticks because they are so easy to contour with and this Mally Beauty one is a very natural looking color on me! (note: the picture is the old packaging of this product)

Blush: It Cosmetics Vitality Blush Stain in PRETTY IN PEONY
-One of my very favorite blush formulas because of how long they stay on my cheeks. All day, people. This blush actually wears all day!

Finishing: It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Powder
I love how this powder mattifies my skin, helping to keep me shine free without caking into my pores and lines.

Eyebrows: Wander Beauty Micro-Brow Pencil in Blonde
-Easy to apply, stays all day and looks so natural!

Mascara: Laura Geller Lash Boss Mascara
-I wish I knew how to apply false lashes. I've tried before and I'm terrible at it. This mascara comes pretty close to that look, at least I think so?

Liquid Liner: Doll 10 Beauty 2 The Point Liner in CAFE NOIR
-I'm so very bad at winged linger. One end of this liner has such a super small, super thin tip I can actually use it and not look like a racoon! It also lasts all day, even when the wind was making my one eye tear up like crazy.

Waterlines: Wander Beauty Slide Automatic Gel Liner in Black Sand on upper and Secret Weapon Pencil on lower
-These pencils are great since they glide on like butter and don't bother my super sensitive eyeballs

Eyeshadows: Too Faced Glitter Glue Primer with It Cosmetics Superhero Palette
-CONFIDENCE on brow bone, MAGICAL in crease, POWERFUL on lid and and POW to set all my undereye concealers. I wish they would sell POW separately for that purpose because it does a great job at setting concealer, adding to brightening the area and all without creasing or settling into fine lines!

Lipstick: Doll 10 Beauty Lip Genius in Upgrade and Butter Up Lipstick in Daddy's Girl
The Lip Genius is a thick liner that wears for a long time and is such a pretty, pale pink color! The Lip Butter is one of my all time favorite lip colors. It is such a perfect light pink, and the formula is nice and moisturizing.

Here are some of my favorite shots from the shoot. Of course we had to include Stretch in some of them!!

It was a very windy day on the beach, as you can tell by hairs that kept blowing out of place on both of us. Tommie's hair flows much more majestically in the wind.

Both my dress and top are from Lilly Pulitzer. The sandals are Aerosoles and the jeans are actually Pajama Jeans which are the most comfortable jeans in the world!

I hope you enjoyed my engagement photoshoot post!
Our photographer was John from Precious Memory Video. If you are in the NY or NJ area and need a professional photographer, he is absolutely worth checking out! Tell him you saw my pictures! He will be doing the photos and video for our wedding as well.
