Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Max Hold Gel

I recently picked up the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Max Hold Gel by Shea Moisture from Target. I used it for the first time the other day and was quite pleased with my results! Read on for more.

Here is some information from the brand:

"Shape hair and strengthen styles with this alcohol-free gel that provides long-lasting hold to natural and chemically processed hair without crunchiness or flaking. Nutritive Jamaican Black Castor Oil and certified organic Shea Butter blend in a lightweight formula that restores healthy moisture and strengthening hold. Peppermint oil invigorates the scalp for a stimulating experience."

I've tried other products from the Jamaican Black Castor Oil line from Shea Moisture a few years ago and re-bought some of them a few times. My original review of those is HERE. Like the rest of the line, this does have a play-doh scent to it, but it does not linger and it also is not very strong so that's a good thing.

As far as gels go, my hair tends to really like firm, max, strong hold gels so I had high hopes for the silicone and alcohol free styler. I was NOT disappointed! I really liked my results.

I used the gel on wet hair after my leave-in conditioner but before my oil. I used about a quarter size amount per section on my high porosity, super frizzy, dry hair raking it through and scrunching. I air dried completely. The gel dried with a very hard cast. It did feel quite stiff. Luckily, the cast scrunched out with no problems and I have shiny, defined curls with minimal frizz underneath! My hair did not feel super duper silky soft once I scrunched out the crunch, but it also didn't feel hard or stiff so that was good.

Here is everything I used that wash day:
  • Pre-Poo: Pure Coconut Oil
  • Cleanser: Curlsmith Conditioning Wash
  • Conditioner: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque (an oldie but a goodie)
  • Stylers: Shea Moisture Hydrate and Repair Multi-Action Leave In Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Max Hold Gel, Pure Argan Oil

My Day 2 hair when I woke up looked like I didn't even need to touch it up at all. I wish I snapped a picture. But then I did a super intense workout and it did frizz out a bit. I could have revived it very easily but wasn't feeling my best and took a nap instead. I do believe however this gel has the promise to give me good multi-day hair when I refresh it properly.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Max Hold Gel by Shea Moisture. A fair price point, good ingredients inside and it delivers excellent results.
