Jessicurl Curly Wavy Review and Demo: Rediscovering Holy Grails!?

Jessicurl is one of the first brands I remember trying when I was learning about my curls years ago. At the time I first started using them, the packaging was green with red lettering. I loved the products and have always considered them one of my favorite brands, but to be honest, the pathetic excuse on why I haven't had them in my stash in a little while is just due to pure product junkie-ism. Le sigh. This was also the first time I used all Jessicurl for a wash day and WHAT!!! Why have I never done this before either!? Well, I won't let those things happen again! Today I'm here with a detailed, updated review on almost the whole line. Read on for more!

Jessicurl was created years ago by Jess McGuinty after struggling for years with her own curls and not being satisfied with anything that was on the market. If you'd like to read her story in detail, you can do so here.

All Jessicurl products are cruelty free, vegan, gluten free and contain no silicones, parabens, sulfates or any harmful ingredients at all. There are also no extra fillers in the line- every ingredient inside is there for a reason! Check out this part of her site for details on the ingredients used.

The Jessicurl line comes in a choice of three scents: Unscented (great for everyone with extra sensitive noses), Island Fantasy and Citrus Lavender. Both actual scents are not too strong or overwhelming at all. I enjoy both, but if I had to pick one I think Citrus Lavender is my favorite.

Them: "Mild and moisturizing shampoo alternative. With Hair Cleansing Cream, you can wash your hair and have it look good on the SAME day! I know, it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. Hair Cleansing Cream is a gentle, moisturizing cleanser that doesn’t create tons of lather but will clean your hair and leave it quite soft. It’s best suited for thicker, drier hair types that need more moisture, and is also safe for color treated hair."

Me: I wouldn't classify this as an actual co-wash only because it does product a wee little bit of lather. I like that though. It is slightly creamy but not super heavy to where it would weigh hair down too much. This cleansing cream leaves my scalp clean while leaving my hair feeling pretty moisturized. That being said, I still do need to follow up with a conditioner but that is the case with 99% of all cleansing products out there for me.

Them: "Sulfate free shampoo that won't weigh hair down. Gentle Lather Shampoo is completely different from those bad old days of harsh shampoos. It uses only the gentlest cleansing agents available and creates a mild creamy lather. It will clean your hair but will not strip it out, so you can actually wash your hair and have it look good on the SAME day! I know, it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. If you have fine hair that gets weighed down easily, you’ll especially love this because there are no added oils or moisturizers. It is also a great shampoo for straight hair."

Me: I really want a full size of this stuff. Such an incredible cleanser! I'm the type of girl who likes to use sulfate free shampoo on my hair and not just co-washes or cleansing conditioners. The lather was light and spread all around my scalp. So little was needed. I was happily surprised how soft my hair felt upon rinsing, even before applying conditioner.

I'm actually not sure if I like the Cleansing Cream or Gentle Lather Shampoo better. What I do know, is that both of them made my hair feel clean but not stripped and prepped my curls for the conditioner and stylers to follow. Gentle Lather does lather a bit more than Cleansing Cream. I think finer curlies would prefer Gentle Lather. With my high porosity, super dry, frizzy hair, I think I'd enjoy rotating both since I wash my hair two to three times a week.

Them: "Daily conditioning for dry, thirsty hair...It has shea butter (hence the adorable name), jojoba oil, avocado oil and tons of lovely herbs and spices that are all great for hair and scalp. Together they combine to make a thick, moisturizing conditioner that isn’t too heavy and not at all greasy. It makes your curls so soft you’ll have a hard time keeping your hands out of them. (But do try – touching your curls too much is a no-no)"

Me: I love how rich this conditioner is and how it helps detangle so quickly. The slip is out of this world. I use this one mostly as a leave-in conditioner to make sure my hair is moisturized, hydrated and ready for the stylers after. It leaves my hair so so so so so so so soft and bouncy. I need to keep a bottle of this around at all times. I'm claiming it as one of my favorite leave-in conditioners now. I am very generous with applying leave-in conditioner lately, it has made such a difference in my hair. That being said, since I do get heavy handed the 8oz bottle doesn't last me super long, but I still find it worth it for the feeling, moisturization and all the fantastic hair growth ingredients inside.

Them: "Intense pampering for dry hair...It is INSANE how moisturizing this conditioner is. It used to be called “Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment” but then I heard from more and more curlies that they were using it every day, and some were even using it as a leave in. Who am I to limit how much you use your favorite conditioner, right? Thus, I dropped “Weekly” and just left it at Deep Conditioning Treatment. It’s thick, it’s rich, it’s moisturizing, it doesn’t build up – it really is the ideal formula for restoring moisture to dry curly hair. It also works great as a shaving cream – that even includes bald men! :)."

Me: If you are protein sensitive, the good news is this is protein free. My hair does love protein but it also craves an intense moisturizing treatment sometimes
and that is exactly what this is! This deep conditioner works great for me with or without heat. I also really like to use it to follow up and give my hair back moisture after doing a hard protein treatment. If my hair is being extra dry, I can also use this one as a leave in. This stuff is POTENT. Seriously, a little goes far. As I keep mentioning, my hair is super dry, frizzy and porous and I don't skimp on product application. But even for me, I don't need a whole lot which is extra awesome!

Them: "Provides all day hold and frizz control for all hair types. For a while now, our customers have been asking us to provide them with a stronger hold styling product. If we had to rate our current styling line up, Gelebration Spray and Rockin’ Ringlets would be light hold, and Confident Coils would be medium. That definitely leaves room in the category for a firmer hold styling product and we hear you that you’ve been filling that need elsewhere. Well, you don’t have to anymore, Jessicurl fans! After months of testing, we’re super excited to introduce Spiralicious Styling Gel, the thicker, stronger hold styler you’ve been asking for. Spiralicious is much thicker than Confident Coils and very gel-like in consistency but does not flake in the hair like many gels can. While it can dry crunchy, that initial crunch scrunches out really easily, leaving the hair very soft to the touch, but the curls hold up all day. No ramen-noodle curls here! One of the best parts about it is the frizz control. Seriously people, the frizz control on this stuff is NO JOKE! If you currently use Rockin’ Ringlets, you’ll find that the two work together really well. If you don’t find you need a curl enhancer (which is what Rockin’ Ringlets is), Spiralicious will provide you with fabulous hold and frizz control but without giving you “helmet head.” It’s pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. :)"

Me: One of my very favorite, must have at all time firm hold gels. Spiralicious is exactly what I look for in a hair gel: holds the curl without feeling stiff once I scrunch out my cast and extends my good hair day up to days 4 and 5. It helps my hair survive super sweaty work outs and very humid, summer days. It fights frizz, makes my hair look shiny and is pretty much magic in a bottle. In my opinion, this is one of the very best hair gels of all time.

Them: "Encourage and enhance curls. Rockin’ Ringlets is a powerful curl enhancer that will boost waves into curls and make your ringlets rock! It has a thin consistency and light-to-medium hold so it won’t give you ramen noodle hair, but helps control frizz all while allowing your hair to stay touchably soft. SEE why I love it so much? I’m pretty sure you will too."

Me: I can't use this on wet hair alone since my hair does prefer firm hold (that is where the above Spiralicious gel comes in) but when I layer it under my gel it helps encourage my curl pattern and helps with frizz even further. This product also plays nicely in my second and third day hair. It is lightweight so I don't feel the additional step in my wet hair regimen, but it is a step that really makes a difference.

Them: "Defines touchably soft curls in all climates. It’s a creamy styling product with a consistency thin enough to make it easy to distribute through even the tightest, kinkiest curls. It creates amazing definition and provides excellent humidity protection. By itself it’s not super curl enhancing, which makes it great for tighter curl patterns looking to elongate rather than enhance curls. For those with looser curls, using it with Rockin’ Ringlets will give you all the bounce, definition and frizz control you need."

Me: Like Rockin' Ringlets, Confident Coils' is not firm enough by itself for my hair when it is wet. That being said, this cream is incredible for me on days 2, 3 and so on! When I do use it on my days old hair, it helps fight frizz, leaves my hair soft and bouncy! A favorite days old routine now is to use the Awe Inspiraling Spray (see below) followed by this and maybe a drop or so of the Oil Blend if necessary.

For days old hair, I look at how much moisture, hold and re-curl formation I need to do when I decide whether to go for Rockin' Ringlets or Confident Coils. Since my hair is on the super frizzy, more dry side, as I keep on mentioning, more often than not I go for the Confident Coils for the wee bit extra hold and weight.

Them: "Midday curl refresher. I created Awe Inspiraling Spray because some days your curls need a little help making it through. Maybe you got hit with a big gust of wind while grabbing your afternoon latte. Maybe you didn’t want your hair to be the reason you declined a ride in your friend’s new convertible. Maybe you’re going out after work and your curls need a little pick-me-up. Whatever the reason, Awe Inspiraling Spray is here to help. It doesn’t have any ingredients that provide hold, rather, it works to rejuvenate the styling products you already have in your hair. As a result, you’ll get the revitalized curls you seek without adding a sticky, producty feel."

Me: This is a great 2nd, 3rd and 4th day hair refreshing spray. It helps revitalize my curls, prepping my hair for a cream or gelly that I apply over it and adds back a nice scent to my hair.

Them: "Oil Blend for Softer Hair. This is a simple blend of oils that can be used in so many ways. I created it because I love using oils in my curls to add softness and shine, and every day I was using a different one, either jojoba, avocado or coconut. One day I actually stood there for several minutes trying to decide which to use that day, got fed up and thought, “To heck with this! I need to simplify!” I put them all together in one bottle and got the best that each of my favorite oils had to offer. I think you’ll find that the ratio is lovely – not super heavy but enough that you know you’ve put some groovy oils in your curls."

Me: This is such an amazing oil. I use it on wet hair as part of after shower styling and also on days old hair to add shine if needed. It is not heavy or greasy at all and I love how the oils inside, including Avocado, Jojoba and Coconut, as well as some essential oils, are treating my hair at the same time. I've also used this as a Pre-Poo overnight!

Jessicurl also has a Stimulating Scalp Massage Oil that is fantastic to use with scalp massages to help promote hair growth. I've gone through many bottles in the past and kind of feel I need to get another one. They also offer another conditioner, Aloeba Daily Conditioner and another gel, Gelebration Spray which are made for curly waves that are fine and weighed down very easily. Those are not characteristics of my hair (heck, I'm the opposite) so I didn't look to review them, but if that does sound like your hair they may be excellent products for you!

I spoke with the wonderful people at Jessicurl and asked them if any of their products contained heat protectant in case I wanted to use their products and diffuse. They told me the ingredients in their Oil Blend and also any of their conditioners used as a leave in both contain heat protectant properties!

Here is what I used for an all Jessicurl wash day! I was floored by these results!!!! The products work together mixed and matched with other brands, but they really were taken to a whole 'nother level when used all together!! I will be doing this more often.

  • Cleanser: Gentle Lather Shampoo
  • Conditioner: Deep Treatment. Used with heat for 20 minutes before rinsing.
  • Stylers: Too Shea! Conditioner (as a leave-in), Rockin' Ringlets, Oil Blend, Spiralicious.

After rinsing out the Deep Treatment, still on soaking wet hair with my head upright, I applied the Too Shea! Conditioner pushing it into small sections and adding in more water until my hair felt and looked like wet seaweed. After I applied to all sections, I flipped my head upside down and applied the Rockin' Ringlets, Oil Blend and Spiralicious in a "praying hands" type motion over my length. Only after everything was applied did I start scrunching a lot to encourage curl formation. I then twisted my hair back in a cotton towel while doing my skincare. Once I took my hair out of the towel, I scrunched some more, adding a little more Oil Blend and Spiralicious. I used clips to manipulate my front, always misbehaving hairline pieces just a little. I let my hair fully air dry and noticed those front, pain in the butt frizzier section looked slightly dryer than the rest of my hair so I added just a bit more Spiralicious just to those.

I played around with my part a bit in these.
These pictures were taken with my ring light and iphone X, no flash while it was dark out. I prefer to take pictures with natural lighting from the sun as well, but my hair took quite a bit to air dry.

 DAY 2
This was Day 2 after that wash day. To preserve my curls overnight I sleep in a loose pineapple on satin pillowcases. Some days since I toss and turn constantly my hair doesn't survive the pineapple, but it did today. This has been one of my the best Day 2 hair I had, and it even survived an intense work out!

Here is what I used:
  • Dry Shampoo on scalp only
  • Jessicurl Awe Inspiraling Spray
  • Jessicurl Confident Coils

Immediately after working out I sprayed my scalp with dry shampoo and massaged it in. I threw my hair up in a messy bun, showered and did all my skincare. To refesh, I lightly sprayed small sections of my hair with Awe Inspiraling Spray and then using "praying hands" applying about a quarter size Confident Coils to each section and scrunched. I then let it air dry.

These pictures were taken near a sunny window and natural light. No flash. I used my ring light also for some of these, but not all.

Before Re-styling.
Post work out and shower, dry shampoo on scalp only.

After Awe Inspiraling Spray and Confident Coils applied.
I let this air dry again. It doesn't take nearly as long to air dry as fresh washed styled hair does.

Day 2 All Set!

I tried a new technique applying my makeup this day and I LOVE it. I used a damp sponge from Wander Beauty my foundation and concealer, and I also was using setting spray and finishing powder before foundation and then between my base and contour/blush and the results really pleased me. I'll do a separate blog on it.

If you can't tell, I've become re-obsessed with Jessicurl products now! I definitely recommend giving them a try if you haven't yet!!

For a blast from the past, here is my original Jessicurl review video from 2013:

I had the pleasure of actually meeting Jessica herself back in October 2017 at the "The Curl Revolution" book launch party in Manhattan. She is one of the nicest and coolest people I've met in the industry. Her hair is literal curly wavy perfection and obviously, she only uses her products so there is something to be said about that!

Something else really awesome about Jessicurl products is there is an option on their page to buy sample packets so you don't have to commit to a bottle right away if you are nervous!
