Only Curls Hydrating Curl Creme, Enhancing Curl Gel and Towel

Only Curls is a small London based curly hair brand that offers a few products full of great ingredients for our hair without any junk, as well as some much needed tools and accessories! I recently had the opportunity to try their Hydrating Curl Creme, Enhancing Curl Gel and Towel! Read on for my thoughts.

Some information from the brand's website:

"All our styling products are packed with natural nourishing ingredients that penetrate and hydrate the hair without weighing it down. Curly Girl friendly styling products for gorgeous hydrated and defined curls.
No Sulfates, No Silicones, No Parabens, No Mineral Oil, No Paraffin, No Animal Testing."

Both styling products are VERY lightweight. If you have super fine hair that gets weighed down very easily, I think you will REALLY like these products! My hair is actually the opposite: it is super duper dry and frizzy and I look for a little weight in my product to control unwanted pouf. That being said, I actually still liked these! I'll be honest, they were so lightweight I was a bit nervous once I felt them. Since the products are so light, I do find myself being VERY heavy handed with applying both stylers. That said, even when I use a ton of them, on days old hair, buildup or a "too producty" look really has not been an issue at all which is incredible.

Them: "Nourish your curls with this hydrating curl creme that smoothes curls and minimises frizz. Our special blend of Shea Butter, Marula Oil and Aloe, naturally replenishes moisture and restores curls back to their original curl pattern."

Me: I like this curl creme a lot. It's become a frequent go to for me on second or third day hair when my hair wants more moisture. It leaves my hair feeling so very soft and not greasy or heavy. I also liked it on wet hair when I applied it after my leave-in and before the gel.I think this cream helped to form my curls and kept my super dry hair nice and moisturized.

Them: "Define your curls with this oil infused gel that holds curls in shape while adding shine and moisture. Our special blend of Avocado Oil, Kukui Oil and Aloe, naturally hydrates curls, minimises frizz and maximises curl impact."

Me: I have to start off by saying I REALLY hope Only Curls decided to make a Firm Hold gel. My hair has always preferred a firm hold gel on wet hair. This is very lightweight and runny. It does add nice shine and help with frizz. I mentioned earlier I am heavy handed with both styling products, and I find that to be extra true with the gel. I really like the pump component it comes in. If you get nervous around gel or want a lighter hold gel that won't leave you feeling stiff or crunchy at all, this gel is definitely it! I like it to add shine and slight hold back to second or third day hair. That is my favorite way to use it. I did try it a few times on wet hair. My wash day (day 1) hair had great definition and felt super soft, but sadly since the hold isn't strong, days 2 and 3 just didn't hold up too well, especially with my intense work outs. What is nice with the gel though is I kept adding more and more and more and it never got greasy or heavy in my hair.

Them: "The Only Curls Hair Towel offers a simple solution for frizz-free curls.
Hair is most fragile when wet. The uneven surface of a regular cotton towel roughens up cuticles and absorbs moisture from only the surface of the hair. Uneven cuticles and inbalanced moisture distribution results in frizz.

The Only Curls microfibre hair towel has been developed specifically for curly hair. 100% microfibre smooth yarns leave cuticles intact and absorb just the right amount of moisture for perfect frizz free curls every time!

Since moisture is displaced from the entire hair, drying time is reduced. This results in less heat damage from diffusing and less time air drying."

Me: This is a lovely hair towel! The microfiber is so very soft. It is a great size to help with scrunching out excess water so hair dries a bit faster with minimal frizz. Since my hair is (finally) getting longer, my ends do stick out when I try to wrap my hair up in a plop or twist.

Here is what I used for this wash day. To really try out the Only Curls Creme and Gel, I used a cleanser, masque and conditioner I'm very familiar with. I also skipped additional oil to see how these products perform on their own.

  • Cleanser: Raw Curls Cleanser
  • Masque: Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Masque
  • Stylers: Raw Curls Conditioner (as a leave in), Only Curls Hydrating Curl Creme, Enhancing Curl Gel.

I first applied my leave in conditioner with my hair upright adding it in small sections with more cool water until each section felt like seaweed. Once that was done, I flipped my head over applied a generous amount of the creme, followed by an even more generous amount of the gel and scrunched with my handers and then with the Only Curls Towel. I then twisted my hair back in another, bigger t-shirt towel while doing my skincare. After I took my hair out of the towel, I added in more gel, scrunching some more. I then air dried. About 75% through my hair drying I went back with even more of the gel since it was about 95% humidity outside and my hair was expanding more than I preferred.

These pictures were taken a few feet away from each other, both with my ring light and no flash. It's crazy how different my hair looks in the different areas.

This is day 2 hair where after using dry shampoo on my scalp post work out, I smoothed and scrunched in the cream followed by the gel to give my hair moisture and help calm down frizz and add back a little hold.

Note: The Day 1 wash day that was prior to this day 2 was different from what was used above.

Video Review:

Overall, I do think the Only Curls products are excellent quality and feel lovely in my hair. Like I mentioned several times though, a little does not go a long way for me with these, but I attribute that to my high porosity and dryness.  I look forward to seeing the brand expand and hopefully offer a stronger hold gel in the future.
