Briogeo Banana and Coconut Nourishing Superfoods Shampoo and Conditioner

To celebrate the one year anniversary of their "Be Gentle, Be Kind," Shampoo and Conditioner duo, Briogeo just released a new version recently: The Banana and Coconut Nourishing Superfoods. In this post I will be talking all about it, giving my review as well as recapping their launch party which I was so grateful to have been invited to! Spoiler: I love this version. Read on for more.

Like all Briogeo, these products are sulfate, silicone, paraben, phthalate, paraben, DEA and artifical dye free. They are also cruelty free. This line is safe for color treated, keratin treated, chemically-treated, and relaxed hair.

I feel like it's only natural to be curious about the differences between these and the Be Gentle Be Kind Replenishing Superfoods formulas released last year. (See my blog review HERE on those.) Aside from different key ingredients, where last year's was Kale, Apple, Matcha and Spinach, this year's formula is more nourishing and richer. Last year's formulas were more about lightweight moisture and I do like this year's better since I look for more intense moisture and for products to fight the dreaded natural pouf in my hair. The shampoo especially has a substantial difference for me. Last year's version was almost at clarifying level, it cleansed my nice nicely but also left it a bit "squeak clean." This years not only cleanses and lathers nice, but moisturizes my hair almost as a co-wash level! I'm so impressed. My hair type is super dry, high porosity, frizzy, unmanageable.

SCENT
I enjoyed the fragrance of last year's products quite a bit, and I like this years as well! This year's fragrance is very heavy on the banana. I'm happy that I barely detect the coconut inside at all since I don't particularly care for coconut scented stuff. These products smell like a fruit smoothie. If you have any aversion to the scent of banana, you'll probably want to go ahead and try different shampoo and conditioner by Briogeo but if you don't mind it or love it, definitely give these a go. The scent is strong and I am sensitive to certain fragrances, but they didn't bother my nose or cause a headache at all. I never had an issue with Briogeo products causing my allergies to act up which is probably because they are a clean brand without toxic ingredients inside.

Me: Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! I'll be honest, I don't have high hopes in general when it comes to shampoos but I am blown away by this one!! It is sulfate free, yet still produces a beautiful, soft lather. It does a great job at cleansing and as I rinse my hair feels silky smooth and a bit moisturized! Being a clear, runny formula I was totally not expecting that and it caught me off guard in such a great way. As I mentioned earlier in this post, it practically left me at a co-wash level of moisture and softness. Yay! Even my wet hair before applying conditioner looked extra shiny. I can't sing this shampoo enough praises.

Conditioner
Them: "Who It's For: Those with dull, lifeless, and dry strands, looking for an everyday solution to nourish hair.

What It Is:  A smoothie-textured hair detox. This nutrient-rich conditioner brings life back into your strands with potent antioxidants and hair essential oils.

What It Does:  Be Gentle, Be Kind Banana + Coconut Nourishing Superfood Conditioner is a creamy, smoothie textured conditioner for all hair types that harnesses the power of antioxidant-rich fruits to support healthy looking hair and scalp.

Me: Like last year's formula, a little went a long way for me. This year I somehow even needed to use less than with last year's which is incredible! It's amazing how much I do not need to use for my hair to feel quenched given the dryness and length of my hair. This conditioner is so rich, I love it. As moisturizing as it is, somehow it didn't feel heavy or greasy in my hair. I like to use it as a leave in conditioner and it really helped to define my wavy curls and also added incredible shine each time I used it. The conditioner provided decent slip when pressing it into my wet hair through the lengths. Additionally, my hair felt so soft. I actually think that this conditioner may be rich enough for me to where if I didn't have time to mask, my hair would still by hydrated and nourished enough. Side note: I mask practically every time I wash which is usually 2 to 3 times a week. I haven't tried it without a mask yet since I wanted to get this review up sooner rather than later, but when I do I will post a follow up. While talking about masks of course I need to give a shout out to Briogeo's own Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask which has been my number one mask now for years! My hair would not be the same without that stuff.

If you'd like to see pictures of the first time I used the conditioner as a leave in, check out this post.

WASH DAY
Here is everything I used for this wash day. I'll take this time to ask Briogeo to PLEASE make a firm hold gel!!! ;) I went with other products I've been using often lately to really get a feel for the difference the shampoo and conditioner made in my hair.

  • Pre-Poo: Prose Custom Pre-Shampoo Mask
  • Shampoo: Briogeo BGBK Nourishing Superfoods
  • Mask: Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask
  • Stylers: Briogeo BGBK Nourishing Superfoods Conditioner (as a leave in), DevaCurl B'Leave In, Arc Angel Gel, Briogeo Farewell Frizz Oil Blend

I applied the styling products in smaller sections, pushing them through the lengths and then scrunching. I then squeezed out excess moisture with my Aquis Towel and added more gel and Farewell Frizz. I then air dried completely.

I urge you to watch my video review because my hair on this wash day looked even better before these pictures. I was almost going to redo this entirely, but went with keeping it real instead. The humidity was INSANE this day and I also got rained on a bit while taking these which caused some unwanted frizz to pop up. I decided to leave these pictures because you can see the definition and shine despite not perfectly ideal circumstances. Also, you can see just how badly I need a trim. My stylist, Sage, has been crazy busy lately and in high demand lately, but hopefully I can catch her soon!!

LAUNCH PARTY
Thank you to Team Briogeo for inviting me to the launch party! I had so much fun. The event was at Paul's Cocktail Lounge inside the Roxy Hotel in Manhattan. The decor in the space was like a dream! Very tropical themed which I'm obsessed with. There were candles all over which had the whole place smelling like smoothies and even a banana candy bar! The bar had a special themed drink to go with the shampoo and conditioner, but since I don't drink alcohol I was happily sipping on some yummy pineapple juice. It was also great to see Nancy Twine, the CEO and founder of Briogeo, as well as meet so much of the team who I have talked with through e-mail in real life.

second day hair
For the event, I went with second day hair. It actually would have looked better but i did a more intense work out that morning than i said I’d do that morning. To refresh, I used dry shampoo on scalp only, then used all Briogeo: The Farewell Frizz Milk Spray as a refresher with the Curl Charisma Gel- applied “praying hand motions” then scrunched. On my ends which are super dry from needing a trim and front I also added in the Curl Charisma Curl Custard for added weight and moisture. Topped it all off with the Farewell Frizz Oil Blend and a little hairspray. Not Briogeo hairspray becuase they don’t make one- but they should, it’d be amazing.

For some really sad reason, my iPhone camera was not behaving well in there. It could have been the combo of the space being hot and darker. Sadly some of my pictures cleary (or more like unclearly?) are not the best quality.

Overall, I really love the new Be Gentle, Be Kind Banana and Coconut Nourishing Superfoods Shampoo and Conditioner by Briogeo. They do an excellent job at hydrating by dry, thirsty hair, while adding shine and helping with my curl definition. And bonus to how delicious they smell.
