Collective Haul & Mini Reviews: Hair Products!

I am a self proclaimed hair product junkie. That and I LOVE a good sale. Combine the two and it leads to some nice haulage. Hehehe. I've been trying to go through my stash and have been using stuff up and have been really good but then good sales happened kind of all at once and they don't last forever! I thought I'd share some hair products I picked up over the past month or so and if I used them yet I will do mini reviews and such. Most of them I paid for myself, if I didn't I will state it.

Check out my hair product haul after the break!

Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils

A few weeks ago, Influenster sent me the newly reformulated YSL Mascara Volume Effect Faux Cils to review. Being a huge mascara lover, I was super excited to try. I have heard wonderful things about this brand but paying over $30 for a tube of mascara is something I couldn't justify. So it was nice to be able to try this out complimentary.

Wen Spring Honey Lilac Replenishing Treatment Mist

Even though my scalp does not like the cleansing conditioners (welp), I still enjoying using some of the other hair products from the Wen line. One of my favorite products from this brand are the multi-pupose "Replenishing Treatment Mists". I will get to how I like to use them in a bit.

It Cosmetics CC+ Your Way to Beautiful Skin QVC Today's Special Value 3/27/15

If you are an It Cosmetics fan, you are going to want to tune to QVC on Friday, March 27, 2015 for the new Today's Special Value! This special kit will feature three new launches plus two existing wonderful It products! I was fortunate the receive this early so I can provide a review of everything!

This kit is featuring products that help illuminate the skin and give you that "lit from within" glow. To be honest, as a girl with shine prone, combination skin, I always get nervous when I see illuminate, illuminizer, highlight, etc because so many of those kind of products can leave me looking way too shiny. But It Cosmetics does do Illumination right! A more subtle, natural glow and never glitter or shimmer.

Hair & Makeup of the Day!

outside lighting. no flash.
Yesterday was my brother's 40th Surprise birthday party. We're 11 years apart! Anyway, I got dressed up nice and stuff for the occasion so naturally, I had my boyfriend take a bunch of pics of me to share with you guys! These Lox Studio extensions that I talked about last time are seriously giving me life while I grow out the breakage disaster. I don't think anyone in my family realized I even had extensions in! Yay!!
inside. no flash.
Hair was Day 2.
Day 1 (Wash Day) I used the Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum shampoo mixed with Living Proof Restore Shampoo. Conditioners with a mix of Olaplex No 3, Curl Junkie Curl Rehab, Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum Conditioner & Living Proof Restore Conditioner. I really do love mixing a bunch of products plus I find it is really good to mix Olaplex No 3 with an intense moisturizing deep treatment such as the Curl Junkie to balance out the protein.

Day 1 to style I used a product cocktail of the Kerastase Initialiste (scalp only), Alterna Lengthening Elixir, Shea Moisture conditioners as leave in (again, me the mixologist has about 4 of their conditioners combined in a jar since I can never pick which one to use), Devacurl B'leave In & Arcangel and sealed with SheaMoisture Intense Hydration oil. I always apply using the Ouidad Rake & Shake Method and allowed the hair to air dry.

Again, you don't need to use as many products as I do and I have my reasons for mixing and using specific ones. I do what works best for me.
inside. flash.
For the Day 2 hair, to prep my hair for my clip ins I used the Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum Leave In Conditioner spray and the Living Proof Restore Repair Lotion. This especially helped to protect the parts of my hair that the clips adhered too.

I really love the Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum line! It leaves my hair so soft and I love the combo of hydration and growth. You can read my review on it here. I saw they added a mask to the collection! i can't wait to get my hands on it!!!!

inside. flash.
Honestly, as soon as I put the extensions in I felt changed. I felt 100x more pretty (not that I think I'm that pretty to start off with) as soon as they were in and I was good to go. My boyfriend even said I was more upbeat and seemed happier, but he tells me I'm beautiful no matter what (smart man. I love him!)

I did have a bit of trouble blending my broken hairs in so they didn't stick out but used Devacurl Set Up & Above plus Raw Curls Pomade to keep them down. I think I applied a bit too much Pomade on the top of my head. OOoopps. Live & Learn?

inside. flash.
My roots are growing in at a good pace. It makes me happy because they means my hair is growing! I am debating to push it a few extra months before/if I get them touched up. I'm trying to decide what to do! I just love being a lighter blonde so much, even if it isn't as light as I'd want (stupid bleach)

I eventually will go for my hair cut. I'm partially dreading it but some of the shorter pieces underneath where I trimmed the breakage I can see is coming in defined and curly and so healthy!

inside. flash.
My shirt is M by Marc Bouwer from QVC. I'm a bit sad it looks like QVC will no longer be carrying his line! On the bright side a lot of his old items are reduced to last click prices right now if you can find your size!

Makeup wise I have been applying foundation and concealer with the beauty blender and beauty blender mini. After watching Kandee Johnson's video on how to use the beauty blender, it's life changing!!

Makeup I am wearing:

Is Kerastase Chronologiste worth $150?

Kerastase refers to their Chronologiste treatment as "Our finest restorative treatment, perfect for all hair types.Never before has such a large amount of active ingredients, in the highest concentration, been combined in one single formula. Chronologiste is a haircare miracle with immediate, transformative and visible results."

During Black Friday's sale last year, I picked it up. $150 for a treatment is a lot of money so I wanted to get it on sale!! I have been using it since January. There are things I really like about it and  things that, well, I don't love. So do I think it is worth $150?

How To Dry Your Hair With a Space Heater

I don't like diffusing my hair. Despite all of the attachments and different methods I have tried to "correctly" diffuse and blow dry my hair, it always turns out looking way more frizzy and having way too much volume then I want it to. My first drying choice is to air dry my hair, not only because it is healthier for my hair but I like how it looks better. However, sometimes time won't permit the hours upon hours it takes my hair to air dry.
With this past brutal winter we had, the last thing I wanted to do in the freezing cold was step outside with a wet head. So what's a curly girl to do? Figure out a different way to get hair drier, faster! Enter: The Space Heater Drying Technique.

There are two super important things to know about The Space Heater Drying Technique.

1. Yes, it will dry hair faster than air drying BUT it will dry hair slower than regular diffusing.
2. This is still considered drying hair "with heat" so it isn't completely damage-free. You want to use a heat protector on top of regular styling products. My favorite is the Living Proof Restore Spray.

The Curly Wavy Guide to Co-Washing

pic from April 2014
Co-washing or "conditioner washing" is washing your hair with a conditioner or specialty formulated product called a "co-wash/cleansing conditioner" as opposed to using a regular shampoo. For those with any kind of texture, co-washing is usually a safer option because it cleanses our hair yet keeps it hydrated. The main benefit of co-washing our hair versus regular shampoo is by co-washing, we are not stripping our hair of natural oils which dries out the hair leading the excess frizz and unmanageability.

For information on co-washing, plus all of my co-washing tips and favorite co-washing products, please come read my article on by CLICKING HERE

Air Repair Rescue Balm & Lip Quencher

Have you heard of Air Repair? This line of skin care is awesome! Air Repair was designed specifically to meet the needs of travelers or those with dry, dehydrated and problem skin. These ground-breaking formulations are also all cruelty, petroleum, mineral oil and paraben free!

Today I will be reviewing two products: the Rescue Balm & Lip Quencher!

Air Repair Rescue Balm
All Purpose Skin Salve & Lip Balm

What the brand says: The "Swiss Army Knife" of Beauty Products. This multi-purpose skin healer is 100% natural and acts as a skin protectant and lip balm in one. With it's nourishing blend of nature's most potent emollients, it soothes on contact. Perfect for both cold and warm climates. Great as a sport salve, especially when going into cold and high altitude environments such as skiing, mountain climbing, hiking, etc. Also, you can apply this rescue balm before and after swimming. Great salve to use to help heal hands and cuticles for professionals such as cooks, bartenders, etc.

Ingredients: Prunus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Lanolin, Apis Mellifera (Beeswax) Wax, Tocoph
erol (Vitamin E), Ricinus Communis (Castor) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Lavandula Essential Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Butyrospermun Parkii (Shea) Oil, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Borago Officinalis (Borage) Oil, Pelagonium Graveolens (Geranium) Essential Oil.

What I Say: I HAD to include the ingredients on here for this product because IT IS ALL NATURAL! This is a great alternative to vaseline/petroleum jelly, which is a by product of oil and that is gross. The uses of this product are endless- my favorite ways to use it have been on my cuticles and also on the ends of my hair which are damaged, old and dry.  The emollient properties have really helped my hair, especially since we still are having a couple cold days. I also have been using it as my nightly lip balm since it is colorless. I love that is is natural and super afforadable too- only around $12!  A little goes a long way and I don't detect any smell. This for sure will be a rebuy for me and I plan to keep one at my desk, in the bathroom and in my purse.

Maximum Moisture Lip Quencher
Plump & Repair Lip Treatment

What the brand says: This is a unique hybrid of lip treatment and cosmetic. This multitasking product plumps, nourishes and heals dry, irritated lips, while imparting a natural, sheer pink sheen. Loaded with Grapeseed Oil, to neutralize the stress caused by free radicals, this lip conditioning treatment delivers a powerful dose of Vitamins C & E to nourish and protect.

Unlike most volumizing lip products on the market that include ingredients to "irritate" the lips causing them to swell, Maximum Moisture Lip Quencher contains VOLULIP which naturally enhances lip volume by stimulating Hyaluronic Acid to increase water retention. The result is fuller looking lips without the irritation. Like all the Air Repair products, Maximum Moisture Lip Quencher is free of Parabens, Petroleum and Mineral Oil.

What I Say: This is another great product. A gloss like consistency that is not sticky, tacky, icky or gooey. It feels nice and slick on my lips with great shine and beautiful pigment. I LOVE the color- it is a gorgeous ligher rosey pink and if you know me, you know I only really wear pink lipcolor! The color is a "your lips but better" and will work on any skintone.  This formula also fills in the fine lines in my lips (years of straw drinking to thank for that) and and makes them look nice and full. Another great product from air repair. A little goes a long way with this too so this tube will last forever. It is about $14.

I am beyond impressed with these two Air Repair products I tried and appreciate the good ingredients inside and what bad ingredients are left out.

You can find Air Repair at Ricky's NYC stores or on the Ricky's NYC website here

8 Things to Know Before Going Platinum or Light Blonde

Pic from July 2014. All my real hair.
See the pic to the left? (or the first pic if you are viewing on a mobile device) That was my hair at it's lightest and blondest. Super light and almost platinum. I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED the color but oh how it ultimately wrecked havoc on my hair, despite treating my hair better than a baby. I am still blonde (my "natural" hair color is Strawberry blonde but man I loathe those red tones in my hair)

Recently, platinum hair has been a big trend. Jared Leto and Kim Kardashian are the latest to join the light side. But really, ever since Elsa from Frozen came around more and more people have been wanting to have that beautiful ice queen hair for themselves.

If you are considering hopping on the platinum hue bandwagon, know what you are getting yourself into, first. As a wavy curly girl who had almost platinum blonde hair for over a year, although the color looks absolutely stunning, it is incredibly high maintenance--especially for curlies.

recent pic from March 2015 with extensions
I have 8 pieces of advice for consideration if you want to give platinum hair a try. The absolute most important being don't even attempt it without Olaplex. Sadly, Olaplex came around a year late for me. I so wish it was there when I went super light! To read all my advice on going lighter, read my article by CLICKING HERE.

Why Your Hair is so FRIZZY & What You Can Do About It

Frizz. A five letter word that is evil for just about anyone who has hair. There are thousands upon thousands of serums and creams and oils and lotions available to try and help fix it. There are various methods of styling our hair to help temporarily mask it. Yet sometimes, despite our best efforts and intentions, frizz still happens to the best of us. "Frizz-free" is a curly's dream. There are three main causes for frizz according to

Though frizz is natural and genetic, it still isn't sometime we want in our hair. Finding the right methods and anti-frizz styling products will help minimize the frizz in our hair and leave us looking as beautiful as possible.

Hair of The Day & My Little Secret

Here are some "Hair of the Day" pictures from Sunday.
 It was second day hair.
On wash day (the day before) I used my recent favorite product combination:
First I used the Tweak-d Restore treatment prior to my shower. I am obsessed with Tweak-d, I will have an updated review soon! I then mixed the Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum & Living Proof Restore Shampoos in the with the Tweak-d Restore to cleanse. The Tweak-d does work extremely well on it's own, I am just my own wavy mixologist and like mixing ;)
For conditioner, I used the Olaplex No 3 Hair Perfector with some of the Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum & Living Proof Restore Conditioners on top and left them in a half an hour or so. I love the combination of the Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum and Living Proof Restore- I can't decide which one to use so that is why I began mixing them all the time. The Olaplex is beyond amazing and life changing but my stylist said to never use it more than once a week because it can be overkill. I'm actually going back to the salon to get another In Salon Olaplex Treatment later this week.
For day 1 style I used Kerastase Initialise on my scalp, followed by the Alterna Lengthening Elixir. Then, using the Ouidad Rake & Shake Method I applied the following in order: Ouidad Moisture Lock Conditioner, Living Proof Restore Repair Lotion and Wave Defining Cream (discontinued but the new curl cream is very similar) and sealed with SheaMoisture Intense Hydration Oil. I plopped after applying, scrunched and air dried with my front sections  in creaseless clip to stretch them out (they are the worst wonky curl pattern ever)
I also have a little secret with these pictures. So I am suffering super duper bad breakage that I don't wish to give details about because the depresses the hell out of me. I legit cry at night over it. I have clip in extensions in my hair! I never thought I would need or want extensions but desperate times call for desperate measures. I didn't want human hair (sorry, the thought of it weirds me out and I can't get over it) and I wanted them pre-curled because I am a bit lazy and don't know what to do with a curling iron. I found the perfect set on HSN by Lox Studio. They are the 20" in the shade Golden Blonde in the style Natural Curl. They came with instructions that made them super easy to apply- even for someone completely clueless like me! Before putting the extensions in I did spray my real hair with the Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum Leave-In Conditioner Spray to protect my hair. Once the extensions were in I used some Devacurl Set Up & Above Pomade to try and tame down my breakage that was sticking out. The color and style of these are such a great match for my hair, the only thing that would make me happier would be if I didn't have the breakage and just didn't need them. Le sigh. But the extensions seemed to work- my family who was over this day didn't even know they were extensions until my one brother and sister in law who were still over late at night watched me take them out and looked confused as heck.
Some point soon I am going to cut off the rest of my super bleach damaged hair so the rest can grow back really healthy again. I am not looking forward to it. I actually dread taking pictures without these extensions now. Lesson learned: bleach sucks, even though my old hairdresser said my hair could have handled it, she was wrong. Thank God for faux real hair clip in extensions!!!!!!!!

Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask

I am a skincare junkie and I especially love face masks. I usually use them twice a week to keep my complexion in tip top shape. I was SO EXCITED when the brand new Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask by Peter Thomas Roth arrived on my doorstep! I have heard of Peter Thomas Roth's brand before but never tried anything from him so I was pretty excited!

Reading up on this mask, it sounded like a dream for my combination skin where I want to focus on treating adult acne AND prevent wrinkles!

Here is what the brand says about the mask:

What it is: A purifying, decongesting, and hydrating mask with odorless Irish moor mud to draw out dirt, oil, and impurities as it infuses skin with moisture and vitamins. Contains no parabens, sulfates or phthalates

With the highest level of organic content in the world, 9,000 year-old black moor mud is harvested by hand from the Irish countryside. Rich in nutrients, essential minerals, and potent antioxidants, it helps protect against skin damage. Black hijiki seaweed provides vital nutrition and hydration as volcanic ash helps revitalize and detoxify skin. Activated charcoal has a magnetic effect that draws impurities and toxins from congested pores. It minimizes the look of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles, leaving skin looking pure, fresh, moisturized, and radiant.

-Irish Moor Mud: Contains an unusually high concentration of purifying bio-minerals, trace elements, vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids.
-Hijiki Seaweed: Provides nutrition and hydration; contains high levels of calcium, iron, and vitamins B1, B2, and C.
-Volcanic Ash and Activated Charcoal: Contains healing minerals that detoxify, revitalize, and draw out trapped impurities and toxins from clogged pores (shrinking their appearance) for cleaner, more breathable, deeply-purified skin.

I have been using this mask once a week for the past 5 weeks. A little goes a long way so this 5 fl oz jar is
going to last me forever! I feel like this mask is set to target every skin concern ever! I think it's awesome there is an ingredient, Irish Moor Mud, that is 9,000 years old. While I had the mask on i started to think that dinosaurs may have stepped in what is on my face right now- who knows??

The first thing I noticed about this mask was it had absolutely no smell whatever. None! Zip! I don't particularly mind scent but if you are fragrance sensitive with your skincare, that is a major plus right there. It was thick but still easy to apply and spread with no fuss. The directions on the box say to leave it on 10 minutes but the first time I used it I left it on about a half hour and here is why: I am so used to using masks that dry "hard" on your face to let you know when you are done. This one doesn't harden whatsoever. I think that will be a plus for those with more dry or mature skin who want a great face mask that has many benefits.

To remove this mask I wet a wash cloth and gently rubbed it off my face, finishing it by splashing my face with cold water. and patting dry. Instantly, my skin felt super soft and looked a bit more even tone. The first week I used it I noticed break outs a few days after and what a concern. However the next few times I used the mask no new break outs appeared so they could have either been a) completely coincidental or b) the ingredients in the mask causing my face to purge some junk that was already inside.

I do like this mask and the benefits it brings my skin, though for whatever reason I still prefer when masks harden on my face to signal they are done. As mentioned earlier, if you have skin that is dry and you are break out prone I think you may fall in love with them little jar right here.

You can purchase this mask at Ricky's NYC or wherever else Peter Thomas Roth is sold.

disclaimer: product sent to me by Ricky's NYC for Review Consideration. I receive no monetary compensation for my review and all opinions and words are my own, honest thoughts.
